EMERGENCY RALLY: MAYOR DE BLASIO, SHUT DOWN RIKERS NOW!
Activists and Community Members Protest Human Rights Crisis at NYC Jail Complex
WHAT:

The Campaign to Shut Down Rikers (SDR) and other activists call out
Mayor Bill de Blasio on his recent remarks of shutting Rikers being a
good concept but that New Yorkers supportive of the idea need to get
real. Conversely, other NY officials (i.e., Governor Andrew Cuomo, City
Coucil Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, City Comptroller Scott Stringer,
Board of Correction member Stanley Richards) along with the Mayors
wife have voiced support for closing the racist torture chamber known as
Rikers Island: A jail complex notorious for its systemic culture of violence
at the hands of correction officers.

WHO:

Family members of victims of correction officer brutality on Rikers,

individuals previously incarcerated on Rikers, Black Lives Matter
movement activists, anti-police brutality activists, jail reform and human
rights advocates, and other community members and leaders.
Speakers: Akeem Browder, brother of Kalief Browder and Campaign to
SDR member, Johnny Perez of NYC Jails Action Coalition (JAC) and NY
Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement, Grace Price of JAC,
Nabil Hussein of Millions March NYC, Josmar Trujillo of New Yorkers
Against Bratton, and others.
