Stanford University

For Immediate Release:

Jobs tells students at Stanford to find what they love to do in todays world
Jun. 4, 2015- Toronto, ON- Last night, well-known entrepreneur, marketer and inventor,
Steve Jobs, addressed Stanfords 2015 graduating students. This continued a longstanding university tradition of inviting great leaders and innovative thinkers to inspire
Stanford graduates to be agents of change, as they step outside the university classroom.
Jobs main message was how he was able to achieve success in his life by balancing
obstacles and celebrating his achievements.
The speech held the attention of more than 23,000 students and faculty members, by
focusing on three stories from Jobs life. The first reflected upon believing in the idea that
everything falls into place eventually, even when things dont go as planned. After he
dropped out of college within the first six months, Jobs started taking typography classes
instead. It was these classes that led Jobs to the invention of multiple typefaces in the first
Macintosh computer. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward
when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards 10 years later, you
have to trust in something-your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever, said Jobs.
He discussed how love and loss helped him to discover what he wanted to do in life.
After 10 years of co-founding a $2 billion company, with more than 4,000 employees,
Jobs was fired from Apple. In the five years that followed, Jobs took risks and continued
to develop two more successful companies NeXT and Pixar. I'm pretty sure none of this
would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. I'm convinced that the only thing
that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love, said
Jobs.
The final part of his address was about the importance of understanding deaths role in
life. After being diagnosed with a rare form of incurable cancer, Jobs was given less than
six months to live. Although the cancer did not take his life, Jobs was able to take away
an important lesson and share it, Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone
else's life. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already
know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Celebrating 114 years of graduates from Stanford on Saturday, 1,782 bachelors degrees
were awarded, 2,026 masters degrees and 904 doctoral degrees. Jobs was invited to
speak at this years commencement because of the inspiration he holds and the example
he continues to lead for these successful students from all over the world.
