Definition of pH
pH is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration; a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.
Aqueous solutions at 25C with a pH less than seven are acidic, while those with a pH greater than seven
are basic or alkaline. A pH level of is 7.0 at 25C is defined as 'neutral' because the concentration of H3O+
equals the concentration of OH in pure water.
Defined by Danish biochemist Sren Peter Lauritz Srensen in 1909.
Acids and bases react with each other in what is called a neutralization reaction. The reaction produces
salt and water and leaves the solution closer to a neutral pH than before.
Low pH
-
acid
strong acid
-acid quality of solution depends on the concentration of ionized hydrogen ion so,
strong acid has high concentration of ionized hydrogen and it is completely
ionized in water
weak acid
-it has low concentration of ionized hydrogen ion
-it ionized partially in water
HIGH pH.
-
bases
-strong bases
high concentration of hydroxide ion, ionized completely in water.
-weak bases
low concentration of hydroxide ion, partially ionized in water.
to measure pH test paper or pH indicator stick is dipped into the solution, then the paper/stick is then
matched to a colour key that come with the container, each colour represent different pH.
pH METER
-This is an electronic devices that use to measure pH.
-They consist of probe that dipped into the solution and a digital read out.
-pH meter is more accurate than pH paper/stick
.
-To use pH meter we need to rinse the probe with distilled water before
every reading, use a solution with know pH value to calibrated it.Make sure
the probe is properly submerge into the solution before taking the reading.
