Hunger is Problem
Everyone is connected to hunger. One in seven children go hungry in the United States every
year (Colman-Jensen). While being a part of my FFA chapter in high school, I was exposed to
this nationwide monstrosity. During the 2012 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, we
participated in the Rally Against Hunger as our national service project. The purpose of this
project was to pack food that was distributed to urban areas in the U.S. This project made us
realize we can do more for our community since people do not worry about hunger in rural areas.
So we started to raise money and collect food for our local hunger problem.
In the visual, the focus was logos; when a person first sees my message they do not
immediately see it as a hunger poster. When they take another look they see the statistics of food
insecurity in the United States, so it gets people thinking about it. The image also has pathos
because of the parent holding the child and the contrasting colors. It can give people mixed
feelings of sadness and curiosity.
The process I went through to create my image was simple. I knew I wanted a simple image
because I believe fewer words makes a bigger impact. I edited the mother and child picture to
look blacked out because I wanted that to represent anyone not a specific type of person. The
words I wanted to be a little ambiguous because I want the people to take another look at it. Once

people start to see it, they see that the message is about hunger in the United States, so it plants
an idea in their head that not everything is okay. People see that food insecurity is a problem
everywhere not just in third world countries.
The call to action in the PSA is to bring awareness to the hunger issue. When I worked for
the Rally Against Hunger, their focus was poor urban areas, so the purpose of the PSA is to get
people to think about hunger being next door. I am not asking for money or food because people
are already working towards that. People need to know that food insecurity is a problem that
affects all areas of the United States.
