This document summarizes the author's experience as a Residential Leader and how it has helped connect their academic studies to real-world application. As an RL, the author helped different people and learned that everyone approaches problems differently, an important lesson for their future career as a psychologist. Other experiences like being an aunt, responsible friend, and organized student helped them develop responsibilities that will help in their future. Seeing others struggle in college motivates the author to succeed, and helping their own residents succeed in school keeps them accountable to their own studies. Overall, being an RL has taught the author that supporting others is a passion, and will allow them to support patients in a children's hospital as intended with their psychology degree.

There have been many situations where I have been a leader. Three of those things were Captain of the cheer team my senior year of high school, leading a group project in one of my major college courses (psychology), and this Residential Leader experience. This experience as an RL has contributed to my understanding of the connection of my academic experience quite a bit. With my future job as a psychologist, you deal with a lot of different people, just as a residential leader does. It helped me understand that everyone is different and people figure out things differently than everyone else, and that is something that is going to be important to understand with my future job.
Beyond the Discipline
Three things outside of the leadership experience that
has contributed to my understanding of the connection between my academic experience and meaningful realworld application is being an aunt to my two nephews, being the responsible friend in my group of friends throughout high school, and not being a procrastinator. These situations have helped me connect my academic experience and real-world situations by helping me become a responsible aunt, friend, and college student. This will help me be the person I am becoming in the future.
Beyond Academics
A couple things that have helped me understand the
connection between my academic experience and realworld application is seeing people not do well in college, and being partly responsible for others academics. Seeing people fail in college for some reason really drives me to finish because I can see how hard it is for people and I want that accomplishment of finishing something some people dont do. Lastly, being partly responsible for my residents being responsible and doing well in classes helps me be responsible in my own homework by seeing the different ways they do things.
Interconnectedness
Within the discipline, beyond the discipline, and beyond
academics, being an RL has really taught me that helping others is one of my passions, because being in this position has given me the opportunity to act as a support system for others, which is what I want to do with my psychology degree in a childrens hospital one day.
