 Born in 1961 In Bratislava, Czechoslovakia

 Emigrated to The United States in 1968

 Studied Architecture, Photography, and


Computer programming

 Graduated with a Degree in Graphic


Communication From the University of
California at Berkeley
 At a young age, Zuzana’s father asked her to
design her First Typeface design, the Greek
Alphabet.

 In college, she met Rudy Vanderlands, a


photographer graduate . They married in 1983

 In 1984, Emigre Magazine was founded by her


husband ( editor of the magazine ), while Zuzana
was responsible of designing many fonts in the
magazine

 Emigre Magazine was a journal for experimental


graphic design and typography in San Francisco,
California.
A FORTUNATE COINCIDENCE
 Zuzana used the Macintosh Computer and
bitmap to create untraditional fonts. This was
the start of Emigre fonts.

 So, she started to sell her typefaces for


designers who want to use her typefaces and do
not use Macintosh at that time.

 Emperor, Emigre and


Oakland were first
appeared in
the magazine.

 They were designed


as coarse bitmapped
faces to accommodate
low-resolution
printer output.
HER WORKING METHOD…
1. She begins with rough thumbnail sketches.

2. She tries out shapes and Serif details in the


Fontographer drawing window.

3. She makes hand drawing on Laser printouts to


make the needed adjustments.

4. Then, she eyeballs the corrections on screen.

5. Finally, her design is out, taking months or even


years of work to solve the design problems.

 In 1987, the other founders of Emigre left the
magazine. However, her husband continued to issue it
till 2005.

 Zuzana’s success is based on a mix of traditional


design and an updated twist.

 In 1980s, her typefaces were criticized as being either


ugly or hard to read.
