April Recap
Dodgeball Tournament
On April 17th, High Tech hosted the Key Club
Dodgeball Tournament to Save Babies. Thanks
to the 9 teams of 5 that competed in the
tournament, and congratulations to the
winners of the tournament, Team Merica! A
total of $275 was raised from the event and
donated to March of Dimes. Thanks everyone
for participating in the dodgeball tournament!

March of Dimes
On Sunday, May 1st, High Tech participated in the March
of Dimes Walk in Asbury Park. HTHS donated over $600 to
the organization; great job guys! March of Dimes is service
partner of Key Club International and is a project that
strives to help fund research and programs that help
premature babies begin healthy lives. The money raised has
been used to help educate women through more than 500
local programs which reduces risks during pregnancy, and
has helped more than 90,000 families who have had a
newborn in intensive care.

Stuffed Animal/Book Drive

Throughout May, Key Club had a Stuffed

Animal and Book Drive for SAFE (Stuffed
Animals For Emergencies). The organization
was founded in 1997 by Cammie Sanders
with an
effort
to provide children who are
12/1
-12/18
going through traumatic, emotional, and
transitional situations with a little bit of joy.
These feelings of joy can calm their fears
and ease their nerves. In total, 360 items
were collected from the drive. Thank you to
everyone who donated!

Holmdel Kiwanis Dinner

Recap
In April, HTHS Key Club members helped out
at the Holmdel Kiwanis Annual Pasta Dinner.
The Holmdel Kiwanis was recently named the
sponsoring Kiwanis partner for the HTHS
chapter of Key Club. This next year, we will
be participating in more Holmdel Kiwanis
events, so stay tuned on event updates!

More about Kiwanis

Kiwanis Clubs are the adult versions of
Key Clubs, targeted towards the alumni
of Key Clubs (high -schoolers) and Circle
Key International (college students). Like
Key Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs have the main
target of giving back to the community
through service projects and helping
others achieve their goals in service
projects. They often host annual service
projects and they also do their best to
help minimize the prices for Key
Clubbers interested in participating in
leadership conventions, such as Key
Leader and District Convention.

Eliminate Project
About Eliminate
The Eliminate Project was the district project of New
Jersey for the past five years and it has the focus of
eliminating Maternal neonatal tetanus (MNT) from
the world. MNT is a disease that infects the nervous
system and causes prolonged contraction of the
muscles that occurs in babies and their birth
mothers, resulting in pain or death for both the
mothers and babies. Each vaccine costs $0.60 and
a total of 3 vaccines are necessary to ensure
complete elimination; so with $1.80, a mother and all
her future babies can be immunized!

Mauritania Eliminated
In 35 countries, MNT has been completely eliminated
and 1 more country can now be added to the list.
On April 24, the World Health Organization's
confirmation survey confirmed the elimination of
MNT from Mauritania!

ELIMINATE
Although the Eliminate Project is no longer
the district project for this upcoming service
year, the project is still ongoing and looking
to defeat MNT from the remaining 23
countries!

2015-2016 District Project

District Project: NJ
Federation of Food Banks
Rather than focusing on the world, the NJ
District Project for this service year is targeted
towards the NJ community itself! The District
Project for this year is the NJ Federation of
Food Banks. This consists of 5 foodbanks, with
one specifically local to us: the Foodbank of
Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Whats The
Importance?
What's the importance of dedicating
a project to Foodbanks? In New
Jersey, 1 out of 8 people struggle
with hunger and 1.1 million people in
New Jersey don't know where their
next meal will come from. By helping
out the foodbanks through food
drives and volunteering, we can help
reduce the amount of people in New
Jersey who are hungry on a daily
basis!

2015-2016 Advocacy Focus

Advocacy Focus:
Autism
The purpose of the advocacy focus
every year is to help speak on behalf
of those who cannot speak for
themselves. For the 2015-2016
service year, the NJ District has
decided to advocate for those who
suffer from autism. With one of the
highest rates of autism in the
country, New Jersey has about 1 out
of 45 children who are affected by
autism so it's important for us to raise
awareness about the seriousness of
the issue!

Volunteering
Opportunities
Throughout the year, there will be
events that we can attend and help
spread the word for helping those
with autism, so stay tuned!
