Worksheet 3:_________
Sec: _____ Atomic and Molecular Balance
Problem Solving
1. Consider a continuous,
reactions take place:
C6H12

steady-state

process

in

which

the

following

+ 6 H2O 6 CO + 12 H2
C6H12 + H2 C6H14

In the process, 250 mole of C 6H12 and 800 moles of H2O are fed into the
reactor each hour. The yield of H 2 is 40.0% and the selectivity of H2 relative
to C6H14 is 12.0.
a. Draw the complete diagram.

b. Specify the basis and the amount of the species available.

c. Calculate the mole of Hydrogen gas obtained.

d. Calculate the amount of C6H14 obtained.

e. Write the elemental balances. (For Atomic Balance Method)

f.

Calculate the molar flow rate of all components in the output stream.

g. Write the specie balances. (For Molecular Balance Method)

h. Calculate the molar flow rate of all components in the output stream.

2. Chlorobenzene (C6H5Cl), is an important solvent and intermediate in the

production of many other chemicals, is produced by bubbling chlorine gas
through liquid benzene in the presence of ferric chloride catalyst. In an
undesired side reaction, the product is further chlorinated to
dichlorobenzene, and in third reaction to the dichlorobenzene is chlorinated
to trichlorobenzene.
The feed to the chlorinator consists of essentially pure benzene and a
technical grade of chlorine gas (98% wt Cl2, the balance gaseous
impurities). The liquid output from the reactor contains 65.0% wt C 6H6,
32.0% wt C6H5Cl, 2.5% wt C6H4Cl2, and 0.5% wt C6H5Cl3. The gaseous output
contains only HCl and the impurities that entered with chlorine.
Determine the percentage excess of benzene, fractional conversion of
benzene, fractional yield of chlorobenzene, and the mass ratio of the gas
feed to the liquid feed.
The reactions are:
