Writing for Meaning or Meaningless


Writing? Examining Teachers' writing Practices and
Children's Writing Development
Dr. Gerde's presentation discusses a series of studies, which identify how early childhood
educators support early writing development. Utilizing a writing framework, which consists of three
componentscomposing, spelling, and handwritingthe studies examine the material and
instructional supports teachers provide to young children and articulates which of these supports is
important for promoting children's writing development across these components. Also, her work
examining how to measure young children's composing will be discussed.

Hope K. Gerde, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Human Development &
Family Studies at MSU. Her research focuses on young childrens language and literacy
development particularly writing, and the interconnectedness among early literacy skills. Also,
her work identifies effective strategies for the design of teacher professional development
including remote service-delivery. Her work has been funded by federal agencies such as NSF
and IES.
