The 5 Step Learning Cycle


Overall lesson objective: In this lesson, students will explore some of the most unique animals that live on
the continent of Australia. Students will understand the reasons why these animals are select to the
environments that they live in.

Engage

Evaluate

The students will be presented with a globe. I will ask


students if they can identify any places on the globe.
Have they heard of Australia? What can they tell me
about the country? I will document what they tell me on
a bubble map.

What Am I?: Students will be assigned an animal by


the teacher. The student will then give three facts
about the animal to the class and the class must then
decide which animal the student has described. The
students will create a card for their animal.

Elaborate

The students will be given a series of task cards. These


cards will include characteristics or actions that are
representative to specific Australian animals. Students will
measure and chart their own accomplishments and
compare them to that of the animals.

Just how these animals are unique to the continent


of Australia because of how they are built, students
will complete a series questions that follow the
format of what if questions that place well known
animals in new environments. I will ask students
what they would happen to these animals or what
they would need to change to survive.

Explain
Explain how there are unique animals who only live in Australia
because there is no land bridge. Students will complete a series of
function cards that are specific to one of the animals that originate from
Australia. These cards provide specific characteristics of the animals
and how it helps them survive.
