FUNCTION OF THE
SKELETON
 Its 206 bones form a rigid framework to which
the softer tissues and organs of the body are
attached.
 Vital organs are protected by the skeletal
system.
 The brain is protected by a skull, and the heart
is protected by the rib cage.
BONES AND MUSCLES

 Muscles are connected to bones

with tendons.
 Bones provide a ridged
structure for muscles to assist in
movement.
TYPES OF BONES

 Bones are composed of

tissue that may take one
of two forms:
Compact, or dense bone
 spongy, or cancellous,
bone.
BONE CATEGORIES
 Bones fall into several categories:

 Long Bones
 Short Bones
 Flat Bones
 Irregular Bones
HUMAN BONES
 Bones connect to each
other by ligaments.
 Blood cells are produced
in bone marrow within
some bones in the
human body.
 An average of 2.6 million
red blood cells are
produced each second
by the bone marrow.
BONES STORE
MINERALS
 Bones store minerals like Calcium
and phosphorus.
 When there is an excess amount
of these minerals in the blood, the
bones store the extra amount.
 When there is a depletion of these
minerals, the bones release the
built up extra minerals back into
the blood.
