Five-Finger Retell Finding Major Events
Standard(s):
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.3 - Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story,
using key details.
Objective: Students will be able to identify if an event in a story is a major or minor event.
Materials: Lillys Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes, event cards, chart paper
Procedure

Introduction: Remind students of what we did yesterday. Talk about how when we got to
the events part of our retelling, it was a little difficult to tell what major events we should talk
about in our retelling because so much happened in the story.

Teach and Model: Teach students the difference between major and minor events in the
story using baseball analogy. Model deciding if an event from Lillys Purple Plastic Purse is
a major or minor event.

Guided Practice: Have cards that say different events from the story. Work together as a
class to decide if the events are major or minor. Put them on a chart. Do a five-finger retell
using the major events that we found.

Independent Practice: Students will do their independent reading. Guided reading groups
will be called to work with.

Closure: Ask students to do a five-finger retell of a story they read today.

Assessment: Students will be assessed through participation, observation, and conferring.
