Relating Illustrations to Personal Narratives (I like to)
Standard(s):
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.5 - With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic,
respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as
needed.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined
experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details and well-structured
event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.5 - Develop and strengthen writing as needed by
planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.W.10 - Write routinely over extended time frames (time for
research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two)
for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Objective: Students will be able to reread what they have already written and add words and
detailed illustrations to their writing.
Materials:
Ralph Tells A Story by Abby Hanlon
Document camera
Sample teacher writing
Writing folders
Paper
Pencil
Procedure

Introduction:
o Students will be gathered on carpet
o Discuss that the students are making progress on their I like to stories
o Talk with students about how in Ralph Tells A Story his pictures match his words and he
uses details/labels

Teach and Model:


o Show students my I like to story
o Model adding to my words and illustrations
o Show how my pictures match my words
o Remind students to do their best even if an illustration that matches their words is
difficult for them to draw

Guided Practice:
o Pass out writing folders
o Have students look at their illustrations and think about if their illustrations match their
words and how they can add to their illustrations to show more detail.
o Ask a few students to share

Independent Practice:
o Students will go back to their seats and work on adding to their illustrations
o Students may add to their words if they want but should really focus on adding to
illustrations.

Closure:
o Students will do a teacher-led share session

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to show understanding of the concept
taught while they are writing independently.
