Assignment:

Event RECREATION CSDB Wrestling Team Practice

Pre-Assignment 6 Ps of Contextual Analysis

PLACE

The wrestling team practice will be at The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind
(CSDB). The practice will be in the gym building in an adjacent room. There is a
possibility of echo in the room which could make it difficult to hear. There could be
a lack of space for the interpreter to stand. Coaches tend to be loud which often
distorts speech. That could make it difficult to understand what is being said. Most
of the interpretations will probably be commands from the coach. These will be
short and urgent in nature. Since all the wrestlers are D/deaf, is could be confusing
if several are signing at the same time. Student athletes will probably be dressed
in uniforms. The coach and interpreter will probably be in casual clothes, maybe
even jeans for the interpreter. The coach would likely be wearing some sort of
school pride clothing.

PARTICIPANTS

The people involved in this interpretation will include the coach, the athletes, the
interpreter, and me (the student interpreter). Based on the demographics of the
Colorado Springs area, and also of the school itself, the coach is probably a white
male, the interpreter I know is a male and he is probably white. The students will
be approximately 5% black, 25% Hispanic, and 70% white. Im guessing the coach
will be in his late 40s to early 50s, the interpreter will be in his 30s and the kids will
be middle and high school which equates to ages 12-18.The coach and interpreter
know the kids and vice versa. I know most of the kids because I sub in the dorms.
There may, however, be one or two students that I do not know (day students). I
do not know the coach or the interpreter. The coach has the power since he is
running the practice and he has all the knowledge and expertise in this area as
well. The interpreter, as an adult, has some power and even more than that, the
interpreter probably has been working with these kids all year and therefore he
knows the sports signs, the material and procedures, wrestling rules, and even the
personalities of the students. The interpreter, due to the fact he is certified and is
serving as a mentor interpreter for this assignment, has power over the student
interpreter.

PERSPECTIVE

The worldviews of the Participants should be fairly similar. The D/deaf students
have a shared language, background, and culture. This gives them a very similar
perspective on things. Although the interpreter and the interpreter student know
about Deaf culture and ASL, they will never know as much about Deaf culture as
people who live it. Likewise, the D/deaf students know about hearing culture
because they live in a hearing world. Some are much more aware of it and its
impact than others are. The coach being hearing and utilizing an interpreter,
probably doesnt have very strong signing skills if he has any at all. He may also
not know much about Deaf culture, although he has been learning here and there
after coaching the kids all year.

POINT

PURPOSE

PERSONAL

The point is to learn new moves, improve technique and to come up with
strategies for upcoming matches.
The purpose is to practice the moves they have learned in order to dominate an
opponent during a match.
I think I will be a little uncomfortable being the only female there. I am worried
about not knowing where to stand since I have never even seen a wrestling match
before. Also, how will I sign to be able to be seen? Will I have to bend over? Will I
have to get down on the floor? I better wear a long shirt so if I do have to get on
the floor, my shirt wont come up in the back. I am interested in meeting the
interpreter I havent met him before. I am also curious to learn sports signs from
him and to see if there are any different signs he uses that could be considered
male signs. I know that some signs males tend to use more often than women
and vice versa. For example, the sign for interesting.

DEMAND

CONSEQUENCE

Im not exactly
sure where to
go. I know
where the gym
is, but it can be
kind of
confusing s to
where a specific
room is. I also
do not want to
accidentally
wander into the
boys locker
room.

I will be
substitute
teaching that
day at the Deaf
school and will
ask one of the
coaches where
to go
beforehand so
as not to be
late.

I will be on time
and not stressed
from running
late.

Since they are

exercising, it
could get kind
of stinky in the
room.

If it gets too
bad I can
request to
open the door
(if its closed)
and/or a
window if there
is one.

This would
lessen the smell
and make it
easier to
breathe.

It will be difficult
to know where
to be for the
students to see
my signs.

Ask the
interpreter
what he
normally does
and where the
best place to
be is.

I do not know
wrestling
vocabulary.

I can look up
online and try
to find out
what I can. I
can ask fellow
interpreters
what they
know.
I can arrive
early and ask
the regular
interpreter for
some of the
signs.

Maybe these
ideas arent
possible or they
dont work.
I will at least
have a place to
start and I can
feel-out the
environment and
the specific
situation to
move around as
needed to stay
visible.
I will be better
prepared and in
turn, be less
stressed.
My interpreting
will be smoother
and the message
accuracy will
improve.

Go to the gym
during my
planning time to
find where to go
to be sure I
know and I am
not late.

The smell could

be making it
hard to breath
and could be
causing me to
feel sick.

I could request
a break for the
boys to get
water and for
me to go
outside to get
some fresh air.

Have the
interpreter work
first, to see
where he
stands and how
he handles the
situation.

I can ask some

of my Deaf
friends online
and ask them to
send me videos
of them signing,
or show me
signs through
Facetime or
Skype.

Since everyone
knows the
subject and
each other well,
there could be
things that are
not explicitly
stated, but still
need to be
conveyed.

I will look to
the mentor
interpreter for
help as
needed.

I will be able to
interpret an
equivalent
message
including
appropriate
affect.

I will use
context, voice
inflection and
facial
expressions to
help in
uncovering
meaning.

It may be
difficult to
remember my
role as the
student
interpreter,
since I have
worked at the
school as a
substitute dorm
supervisor, a
substitute aide
and a substitute
teacher.

Focus on the
communication
and watch the
mentor
interpreter to
stay on track.

I will be
successful in
interpreting the
message and
also not
overstepping my
role.

Let the mentor

interpreter
know of this
concern to
watch for any
role confusion
that could come
up.

It could be
difficult to
understand the
coach if he is
yelling, as many
coaches do.

I will watch the

mentor
interpreter to
get a feed of
any words I
might have
missed.

Together with the

mentor
interpreter, and
using context
cues, I will be
able to produce
an equivalent
message.

I will turn
slightly and lipread what I can
to fill in the
gaps of what I
am unable to
make out.

It could be
difficult to
understand the
signs of the
wrestlers if they
are signing
while wrestling.

I will tilt my
head or bend
down as
needed to see
better.

I will be able to
understand and
voice
appropriately for
the student to
convey the
intended
message.

I will utilize the

mentor
interpreter for
help.

If the students
ask, be sure to
let them know
your role in this
situation.

Sometimes the
Hispanic
students will
mix ASL with
Spanish signs
and I dont
understand
what they are
trying to say.

I will ask them

to repeat it and
any signs I do
not know I will
ask them what
it means.

I will be able to
voice
appropriately
after learning the
meanings of the
unfamiliar signs.

I will probably
feel
uncomfortable
being the only
female at
practice.

I will be sure to
wear
comfortable,
generic
clothing
instead of a
dress and heels
too feel more
like everyone
else.

I will being to
forget about
being the only
female and
concentrate on
wrestling
practice and in
message
equivalency.

I will focus on
the practice and
message
equivalency,
and not gender
differences.

I am concerned
that while
bending over,
my shirt could
rise up in the
back.

I will wear a
longer shirt
underneath
and tuck it in.

My lower back
will stay covered
and I will feel
much less selfconscious.

I will wear a
belt.
