Students will create an electronic science journal using a tablet.


1. Write the word observation on the board. Ask students
what they think observation means. Tell students that
observation means to explore by using our 5 senses,
looking, smelling, tasting, hearing and feeling.
2. Write goals on the board and discuss.
3. Divide the students into groups of 5.
4. Explain to the students that we will be going on an I Spy
hunt. With their group, they will have to find certain
objects that the teacher will describe. To document their
findings, students will use a tablet to take pictures.

Review how to take pictures with a tablet.


5. Take students outside. Explain that each group will have
3 minutes to find their object and take a picture of their
object. When the students have found their object and
taken a picture, they should return to the designated
location to hear about the next object to be found.

c) I Spy something soft
d) I Spy something that makes noise
e) I Spy something that smells pleasant
6. If time permits, students will come together as a class
and share what they have found.
7. Show students video about classifying animals

8. Explain that classifying means to put into groups. The
class will now classify their findings from the I Spy
nature hunt by using the Lets Draw Free app. With
their group, they will draw their objects and place them
into groups.
9. After students finish classifying, have the students raise
their hands so that you may walk around the classroom
and take a screen shot of their work to save into the ipad
or iphone.
10. Review how to observe and classify objects.

The classroom is arranged with 5 tables. Students will be
taking pictures outside. The playground is surrounded by a
fence for safety reasons. The student groups will draw on their
tablet in the classroom while at their tables.
Kindergarten, 20 students, 9females & 11 males, ages 4-5, 1
African American, 2 Japanese, 1 Hispanic & 17 white, 4 gifted
students, 3 ESOL students, 8 EIP.
