Established in 1770, Madame Tussauds has a fascinating history. New wax figures have enlarged the collection year after year and the treasures on view today speak both about the past and the present of this extraordinary exhibition. The oldest figure is that of the Sleeping Beauty, modeled by Doctor Philippe Curtius. In her young days Madame Tussaud had worked for the doctor and had contributed to the collection with the death masks taken of the prisoners guillotined during the French Revolution. In 1925 a fire broke out and destroyed much of the exhibition. It was not until three years later that Madame Tussauds opened again.
