New for 2002 Season

Use of Double First Base

Per new MA JO ASA rules, the Millbury/Sutton Girls’ Softball League will be using a
double first base. One half of the base is white and the other half of the base is colored
(typically, orange). The following should be enforced regarding use of the double first
base:

a) The white portion of the base resides in play, while the attached colored portion
resides in foul territory.
b) A batted ball that hits the white portion of the double base is declared fair and a
batted ball that hits the colored portion is declared foul.
c) Whenever a play is being made on the runner, the defense must use the white portion
of the base and the runner must use the colored portion.
d) On any force attempt from the foul side of first base, or an errant throw pulling the
defense into foul gound, the defense and the runner can use either the white or
colored portion of the base.
e) On extra base hits or balls hit to the outfield when there is no play being made at the
double base, the base runner can touch the white or colored portion of the base.
Should the runner return to first base, the runner must return to the white portion of
the base.
f) When tagging up on a fly ball, a base runner must use the white portion of the base.
For more detail on these rules, see the ASA rule book under Rule 8, Section M.
