When Will Mulans Reflection Show?
The artwork I created with only functions depicts Mulan as she is struggling to be
accepted for who she is. The sword that she is holding reflects her true self while her physical
appearance puts forth the image the Northern Wei dynasty expected from women. Her defiance
towards gender inequality has always made me look up to her. To portray Mulan as best as I
could, I spent some time thinking about the functions I would use to create her.
I chose the tangent and cotangent functions for Mulans neck and shoulders. I specifically
chose these functions to make her slender frame because they reflect easily over the y-axis and
thus make it easier to make that portion of her body symmetrical. For her chin, I used a quadratic
function because she has an oval face shape. If I were to use a half-circle function instead of a
quadratic, it would look odd because her chin is more pointed. To create her eye creases, I used
cubic functions. Mulan is of Chinese descent and therefore has more of an Asian eye shape. The
cubic function allowed me to make them slightly curved. For her curved upper lip, I used a
cosine function. I used this function in particular because her cupids bow dips inward and is
more curved and I could easily achieve that look by changing the amplitude and period.
Once I had an idea of what functions I was going to use, I put them into the TI-Nspire
Software and restricted their domains. To do that, I inserted vertical lines at the places where I
wanted the function to start and end. From there, I approximated the x-coordinates and tweaked
them until I was content. Overall, I think I was able to make a final product that represents
Mulan and her emotions to the best of my ability.
