BACTERIAL MENIGITIS

Also known as the Pyogenic


meningitis
is an inflammation of the meninges
that develops as a result of
infection from either bacterial or
viral agent.
Causes:
- Escherichia coli
- Herpes
- Streptococcus pneumonia
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Neisseria meningitides
- Enterovirus
- Enterovirus
- Adenovirus
- Mumps virus
Signs and Symptoms:
- constant crying
- excessive sleep
- poor feeding
- a bulge in the soft spot on top of a baby’s head
- stiffness in the baby’s body
- fever
- fever
- back and join pains
Diagnostic Tests:
- Microscopic examination of blood
- CBC
- Lumbar puncture
- Chest x-ray
- CT Scan
- MRI
Nursing and Medical Managements:
- Intravenous antibiotic therapy
- Hyperventilation therapy
- Antipyretic drugs
- Assess frequently the level of consciousness
- Promote bed rest
- TSB
- V/S monitoring
- Keep the environment quiet and dark
- Head circumference should be measure daily
Complications:
- risk for seizures
- sepsis
- permanent neurologic damage
- non-neurologic complications such as kidney failure and adrenal gland failure
