Symphonic Band
Syllabus
Course Outline
Symphonic Band aspires to perform band literature to a high degree of
technical proficiency and artistry. The class will study level 4 -5
literature. (scale of 1-6)
Proper tone production and articulations as it relates to style are
studied and students learn how to apply concepts of dynamics,
intonation, balance and blend, which result in a superior level of artistic
expression.
Required Course Materials
-Instrument (some provided)
-Pencil
-Folder (provided) Students will be billed $15 for losing a folder
-Music (provided) Students will be billed for replacing lost music
-Mutes (brass)
-Reeds (woodwinds)
All Percussionists should have a stick bag with a minimum of:
Hard Plastic Mallets
Soft Rubber Mallets
Soft Timpani Mallets
Hard Timpani Mallets
Medium Yarn Mallets
General Rules/Policies
-Arrive on time to class/Be seated one minute after bell
-No food, drink, or gum chewing allowed in band room
-Do not play any instrument except your own
-Keep your locker clean and locked at all times
-Do not use music stands for anything but holding music
-Treat the band room and all equipment with respect and pride
Attendance
Attendance policy will follow the one outlined in the NHS Student
Handbook. Class cuts will lower a bi-weekly grade by a full 15 points
for each cut. Unexcused tardies will lower the grade by one point each
occurrence.

Grades
Bi-Weekly Assessments Class Effort 40%
20 Points Maximum Students always have the materials needed for
class, are on time, attentive, participate in class discussions, always
ready to play, show steady improvement, support other students in a
cordial, respectful atmosphere. Students follow guidelines for room
and equipment use.
Tests/Quizzes 40%
Students will be given clear objectives on how tests will be assessed.
Significant progress must be noted to earn high scores.
Concerts 20%
Concerts are in essence, a final exam. They are a course requirement.
Except for highly unusual circumstances (approved by the instructor at
least 1 week in advance), or illness, there are no excused absences for
missing a concert. An unexcused absence results in the quarter grade
to drop by 20 points.
