Overview:
The course will examine complementary and alternative health
practices. We will discuss the history and development of
complementary and alternative medicine, how they work, and
their relationship to traditional Western medicine. Areas such as
traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, herbal medicines,
chiropractic, acupuncture, hypnosis, acupressure, and reflexology
will be discussed. The concept of wellness versus disease
treatment, and the mind-body connection will be explored.

Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to
do the following:

Discuss the treatment goals and methods of


complementary and alternative medicine versus
traditional Western medicine, including any strengths and
weaknesses.
Discuss the history, influence, and any discrepancies for
selected CAM practices.
Illustrate an understanding and administer principles of
CAM through exercises and assignments.
Describe the mind-body connection as it pertains to
wellness and recognize mind-body practices that may
optimize health.

Actively participate in class activities and discussions
Complete all evaluative processes for successful course
completion
