The main message of aiming to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night was received and understood. Inadequate sleep is correlated to other diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression. The wording was easy for each person to read and understand.

Summary of Pre-Testing Results I pretested my brochure with a group of five Alaska Native/American Indian adults who are employed at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Everyone in the group agreed that they liked the pictures that were in the brochure and that they found the information to be very educational. The main message of aiming to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night was received and understood by everyone in the group. Several people were quite surprised that inadequate sleep is correlated to other diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression and that seemed to be the motivating factor for them wanting to make a behavioral change. The wording was easy for each person to read and understand and all group participants were very interested in the topic. Only one person admitted to getting an adequate amount of sleep according to the recommendation and the other four people recognized that they should try to get more sleep each night. Two people in the group described symptoms of insomnia and they were interested in getting more information about resolving that. One individual pointed out that they liked seeing the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortiums mission statement on the brochure because it made the information seem more relative to them. Everyone really liked the layout of the brochure and appreciated the pictures that were included. One person recommended that I explain what the numbers mean on the recommended sleep picture graph on the inside of the brochure. They found this picture to be a little confusing, especially with the two different age groups listed. This led to a discussion about getting more than 9 hours of sleep and the negative implications that would have, if any. Questions came up in the group about what, specifically, are the different kinds of sleep disorders and the symptoms that present with these different types. With these recommendations, I would probably remove the graph picture and replace it with a simpler version. I would also briefly list the different types of sleep disorders but then create a separate brochure that would go into further detail about signs and symptoms of sleep disorders and what to do if you think that you have one of these conditions. This brochure and the reactions that were received validated my concerns that most people have no idea how important sleep is and if only they were aware of the negative implications of sleep deprivation, they would make a greater effort at getting the sleep that their body needs!
