700 plants beside Badger Ck, Oct, 2015

Marion has also had assistance from members to plant 200 YRC Ribbons of Green
plants on her property, which is on the opposite side of the creek from this photo.
The site was prepared with weed control paid for through a Melbourne Water
Stream Frontage Management grant. We urge all members, who have a waterway
running through or adjoining their property, to investigate this scheme.

Camera Monitoring
Our wildlife monitoring cameras, purchased through a Melbourne Water Community Project Grant, have been trialed at two more members properties on Mt
Toolebewong,. Cameras need to stay at a property for a month to get a range of
sightings, and we are looking for members who would like to take a walk at Aline
& Johns to identify mature tree hollows that we can survey.
Their property adjoins the Yarra Ranges National Park, and we aim to get footage
of arboreal mammals using nest hollows. Leadbeaters Possums are still recorded
as living on Mt Donna Buang, which is not far away, so who knows what we will
find?
A compilation of footage of the Bowerbirds and a cat in Maureens backyard in
Badger Creek, and birds, foxes and marsupials at John/Aline, and Tessa/Stuarts
properties on Mt Toolebewong was shown at the AGM.

Orchid Season
October is a great time to get out and look for orchids in our region. This Spider
Orchid photo (left) was taken on 4 Oct at Christmas Hills on a HEWI walk.
The council has a lovely little reserve in Juliet Ave, Healesville, which has a great
display of orchids and many other species at this time of the year. We will hold a
walk there next October.

AGM, Sat 24th Oct

We urge everyone who missed our family friendly
AGM at Badger Creek Old School, to visit our facebook page to view the photos Mary put up on the
day. Mark Cairns brought along a range of native
animals, including a wombat, Eastern and Mountain
Pygmy Possum, three lizards and a Squirrel Glider.
Marks engaging presentation showed the wonderful
diversity and richness of our fauna, and had important messages for young and old.
The committee for this year is Arthur, Maxine,
Karen and Adam, and we are able to co-opt anyone
after the meeting, so please give Arthur a call on
5962 5758 if you can help with a project, or any
other way you would like to contribute.

In conjunction with the council, we will be planting next year under some of the larger trees in the
Bluegum Drive Reserve to minimize the risk to
park users of falling limbs and protect tree roots.
Council will supply 1500 plants, and we will grow
500.

Emergency Care for Wildlife

Mary and Hermann Klein have been members for 5

years. They share their time between a home in
Caulfield and a 60 acre property at East Warburtonpartly cleared land through which Cement Creek
West flows. Over the past few years they have been
alarmed by the devastation caused by Sambar Deercreation of mud wallows, damage to saplings by antlers, erosion from tracks and a lack of recruitment of
some plants due to grazing pressure. They are also
active members of Upper Yarra Landcare, and Mary
has applied for a CMA grant on behalf of that group
to commence recording deer damage in that area.
Left: this was thick bush until a year ago and now is a well
worn deer track.
Right: Plant guards to exclude deer and rabbits.

Wildlife carer and vet nurse, Tanja, will be the

guest speaker at an informative session that deals
with emergency care for wildlife. Find out what to
do if you come across an injured animal, how to
check pouches for young and other helpful information. Cost: $2. Please RSVP to the Toolangi
Castella
Community
House
tdchinc@bigpond.com
A Fauna and Toolangi session will also be held in
November. This will be a spotlight evening
to identify local fauna. Date tba.

Grant Applications
We have applied for grants from the PPWCMA
and Melbourne Water this month. Our revegetation activities along Badger Creek in the coming
12 months will concentrate on planting the last
section behind Bluegum Drive between the park
and sanctuary, and controlling the weeds in existing sites. As well as grants to support our ongoing
costs, we have applied for 4 monitoring cameras
from the CMA to be used on private land. We aim
to combine the use of the cameras with training
local school children, and will establish a Student
Landcare Stewardship Award Scheme for our
member schools.

New Members
We welcome to the group Ian and Amanda, of
Yarra Valley Archery Park, Launching Place. They
are using our Tordon sticks to control ragwort and
thistles.
