EcoPower TM Cabinet

The CommScope EcoPower Cabinet provides an eco-friendly DC backup power

solution for Wireline and Wireless networks. Our patent pending cabinet design is
modular and flexible to meet your most stringent backup power needs. The cabinet
utilizes proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells to provide industry
leading power density, reliability, and remote monitoring. Housed in a secure,
weather resistant cabinet for outdoor deployment, the EcoPower fuel cell power
solution is feature rich and has ease of installation and maintenance.

Product Description
The EcoPower cabinet has been designed to generate
up to 16 kW DC output with two Hydrogenics 8 kW
fuel cells (HyPM XR 8). It can be configured with one
8 kW fuel cell unit in the factory and the second 8 kW
unit could be added in the field. The balance of the
plant and associated equipment is also modular so
the initial cost is minimized and you pay-as-you-grow.
Regardless of power output, the cabinet is cooled
without the use of outside air in a sealed compartment to keep out dust, contaminants and condensation, thereby preventing deterioration of the equipment.

Our patent pending cabinet cooling and heating

system assures that the PEM fuel cell delivers
optimum power output at ambient temperatures that
can range from 40 C to +46 C. The Hydrogenics
HyPM XR 8 fuel cells have industry leading efficiency
of 55 percent with no limitation on start or stop
cycles. They have a fast response time of providing
full power in less than one minute. A small battery
string or ultra capacitors are used for bridging power.
With a reliability of 99.999 percent, you can be
assured that your network equipment has uninterrupted power during utility power failures.
There is no static degradation or scheduled maintenance requirements for the HyPM XR 8 fuel cells as
compared to batteries and diesel generators, resulting in lower operational costs and total cost of
ownership. The EcoPower cabinet solution requires
less space compared to batteries and diesel generators; the relieved space can be used for revenue
generating telecom equipment.
To help ensure the security of the EcoPower cabinet,
each unit is factory equipped with alarm cabling that
sends a signal from the remote site to a central
location if an attempted unauthorized cabinet entry
occurs. The doors are equipped

EcoPower Cabinet

with security hex-key locking mechanism and can

also be secured with padlocks for added protection.
In addition to external security, each EcoPower
cabinet is equipped with a system controller, which
provides overall power system control and diagnostics including: hydrogen and air intake management to the fuel cells, emergency safety shutdown,
voltage setting, cabinet cooling and heating system
control, fuel monitoring, alarm reporting, visual
alarm indicators as well as other functions. The
system controller continuously monitors the AC and
DC bus voltage to trigger the fuel cell operation for
maintaining an uninterrupted power supply.
Quality materials, such as the corrosion resistant
1/8 thick heavy-duty aluminum is used for the
enclosure and most of the cabinet components,
results in a durable, weather safe cabinet. These
materials are used because of their strength,
durability, fire and corrosion resistance, and heat
transfer characteristics essential for outdoor applications. An electrostatically applied polyester paint
produces an extremely durable, high quality finish
on all surfaces of the cabinet as well as an attractive appearance.

Designed specifically for the outside plant environment,

EcoPower cabinets optimize heat transfer, environmental
protection, and ease of installation and maintenance.
CommScopes attractive and rugged cabinets are
deployed in harsh environments throughout the world,
including the United States, South America, Central
America, Middle and Far East, and Canada. Ongoing
reliable operation in these climates is a testimony to their
overall quality. Our CommScope manufacturing facilities
and design engineering are ISO9001 registered to
ensure high-quality products and services.
The fuel cells are designed to meet UL and CE requirements and the cabinet solution is designed to meet
Telcordia GR-487 requirements, thereby assuring sturdy,
durable, environmentally secure, and low-maintenance
cabinets. Each cabinet is assembled, wired, and systemtested at the factory to provide not only the high
standards of quality but also to assure quick, troublefree installation.
We know that when your customers need service, you
need to deliver. Let CommScopes EcoPower cabinets,
with their integrated system monitoring and built-in
alarms provide the power you need to help keep your
customers satisfied.
