Review
"Hegel's Geschichte der Philosophie was one of the grand
products of the renaissance in historical learning that
took place in early nineteenth-century Germany. . . .
Hegel remains relevant today for his recognition that any
self-critical philosophy must include a knowledge of its
own history. A self-aware philosopher, Hegel firmly
believed, knew where his ideas came from and their
social and cultural context. . . . This is still the only
available translation of all three volumes of Hegel's
history."Frederick C. Beiser, The Fate of Reason:
German Philosophy from Kant to Fichte
(Frederick C. Beiser)
"[Hegel] is, without doubt, the Aristotle of our postRenaissance world."J. N. Findlay, Hegel: A Reexamination

Aristotle is one of the greatest thinkers in the

Western tradition, but also one of the most
difficult. The contributors to this volume do not
attempt to disguise the nature of that difficulty, but
at the same time they offer a clear exposition of
the central philosophical concerns in his work.
Approaches and methods vary and the volume
editor has not imposed any single interpretation,
but has rather allowed differences of interpretation
to stand.

When I was young, the Crusades

were portrayed as brief incursions -not much more than prolonged raids.
It was not until I read Runciman's 3
volume history that the duration of
the kingdoms established by the
crusades became clear. Runciman
was a gifted historian -- combining

scholarship with story telling -- and

this is arguably his finest work. While
I have heard opinions that these
books are "dated" -- and this is
probably true -- I think the average
reader looking to get a compelling
overview of the crusades could not
any better than this and the 2
volumes that follow.
