Session Topic: Inclusion and Instruction for English Language Leaners

Time: 2:35 3:10

Scribe: Brayden Wirzba

Interesting Points
1. ELL students include students who are far below level of language proficiency.
2. Students need materials where they can learn to increase their literacy skills and still
connect to the material.
3. Structures in the guided reading time (Daily 5). These structures allow a teacher to
take students and differentiate groups in order to promote individual learning.
4. Clarity in language. Clear to grade level.
5. Group work for students to learn from their peers (friendship, buddy system)
6. Finding how students learn in steps and ZPD. Incorporate scaffolding.
7. ELL students often feel excluded in the classroom.
8. Pace yourself as a teacher, work with ELL students and do not try and solve all their
literacy problems at once.
9. Growth mindset environment. Do activities, celebrate learning, celebrate making
mistakes, and all those things which make their learning have a positive feeling.
10. Provide audio options for students. They can relate to the way you model good
English language skill.
11. Using cell phones to have students listen themselves back after they read a passage.
They can hear and identify where they think they need to grow and you can give
suggestions.
12. ELL students may use graphics to take notes or learning. This should not be
discouraged.
