OXFAM REACTION ROBERT ZOELLICK PRESS CONFERENCE

Oxfam International spokesperson Caroline Pearce said:

ON THE VOLCANO
“The volcano’s impact on African economies is one more blow to a continent still
reeling from the food, fuel, climate and economic crises. This is yet another reason
why the rich world needs to deliver on its aid promises”

WORLD BANK REFORM

“The Bank is talking about a new world order where poor countries are equal to the
rich ones, but it can’t even get a decent reform package agreed at its own board.”

GLOBAL FOOD FUND

“There are 10 million people at risk of famine in West Africa right now. Poor country
governments desperately need more money to support their small farmers.”

“Today’s announcement is welcome, but donors to the Fund now need to make sure
it complements rather than competes with the UN’s efforts to respond to the food
crisis.”
