PLASTERING

What is plaster

Plaster is a plastic mortar. In order to


obtain an even, smooth, regular and clean
surface of ceiling and walls, a thin
covering of plastic mortar is applied on the
surface. This thin covering is known as
plaster.

What is plastering and rendering


The process of applying this covering on
the surface is known as plastering.
Plastering on external exposed surface is
known as rendering.

Type of plaster
Plaster may be different types Cement plaster, lime plaster, mud plaster.
And special types of plaster
Water proof plaster, plaster-of paris,
stucco plaster, etc.

Cement plaster- cement plaster is a mixture of


cement and clean river sand with suitable
amount of water. the proportion of cement &
sand is 1:3 or 1:4.
Cement plaster may be done in one or two coats One coat plaster
Thickness- 12 to 13 mm
Two coat plaster
Thickness- first coat 10 to 12 mm
second coat 3 mm

Lime plaster- In lime plaster fat lime should be


used. The proportion of lime & sand is 1:3. the
thickness of plaster is 13 mm.
Lime plaster may be done in to one or two coat
One coat plaster:- thickness- 13mm
Two coat plaster:Thickness:- first coat 10to 13 mm
second coat 3mm

Mud plaster:-Mud
plaster is a mixture of
mud and husk .this is
cheapest type of plaster.
It can be done in to two
coat.
Firs coat is 13 mm and
second coat is 6-7 mm.
second coat is applied
after first coat has set
but not fully dried.

Water proof plaster:- this mortar for


plaster is prepared by mixing on part of
cement, and two part of sand, and
pulverized alum at the rate of about
12kg/m3 of sand.
In this mortar the water prepared by
dissolving 75gm of soft soap per liter of
water.

OBJECTS OF PLASTERING
To protect the exposed surface from
harmful effects of atmospheric agencies
such as rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.
To conceal inferior materials and defective
workmanship.
To develop decorative effect or to improve
the appearance.

DEFECTS IN PLASTERING

Cracks:-

Falling of plaster: Bond of plaster with the background may


not be perfect.
Too much thermal changes, Imperfect
bond between successive coats of plaster.
Expansion or shrinkage of the plaster itself
during drying.

Blistering or blowing of plaster:-

Efflorescence:-
