What Does Organic Mean?


Organic food is produced by the use of renewable resources and the
conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for
future generation.
-no antibiotics or growth hormone on the meats, poultry, dairy and
eggs.
-Produced without using conventional pesticides; fertilizers made
with
synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge, bioengineering; or ionizing
radiation.

What is sustainability?
To create and maintain conditions under which humans and nature
can exist in productive harmony to support present and future
generations.

Sustainability is establishing goals in green building, clean energy,
transportation, climate protection, sustainable operations, waste
reduction, recycling, environmentally preferable purchasing,
sustainable water systems.

food purchases by 2020.
-Residential halls dining food
achieved 21% purchases in

Use the Universitys purchasing power to meet the preferred purchasing standard in
sustainability objectives.
Defined as cradle-to-cradle- meaning that the supply chain is accountable for
environmentally preferable decisions throughout a products lifecycle throughout
production all the way through recycling*

Sustainable Foods
Multicropping: Planting multiple species on one piece of land, which
can include:
Crop Rotation: Changing what is planted on a particular location
season to season
Intercropping: plant 2 or more crops, w/ differing characterics that
help reduce the growth of weeds, increases plant diversity.
