Mrs Eaves

Zuzana Licko

Mrs Eaves
who is she?
Mrs Eaves is a
transitional serif typeface
designed by CzechAmerican Zuzana Licko
in 1996.
It is a revival of
Baskerville font and
was named Mrs Eaves
as a tribute to Sarah
Eaves, the love of John
Baskervilles life.
Mrs Eaves is licensed
by Emigre, a type
foundry run by Licko
and husband Rudy
VanderLands.
Sarah Eaves was
type designer, John
Baskervilles live-in
housekeeper. Eventually
Sarahs husband, Mr
Richard Eaves abandoned

her and their five

children. Mrs. Eaves
became Baskervilles
mistress and eventual
helpmate with typesetting
and printing.
Mrs Eaves married
John Baskerville
within a month of her
estranged husbands
death.

There is a softness about

the Mrs Eaves typeface that
is quite intentional. Zuzana
Licko rounded the serifs
and terminals, lowered the
x-height, widened the lower
case and reduced the contrast
of thicks and thins in
comparison to Baskerville.
The result is a very attractive
and a more organic typeface.

to my dear and loving husband

If ever two were one, then surely we.

If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.

If ever wife was happy in a man,

Compare with me, ye women, if you can.

I prize thy love more than whole

mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.

My love is such that rivers cannot quench,

Nor ought but love from thee

give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay;

The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.

Then while we live, in love lets so persevere,

That when we live no more,

we may live ever.
