Technical Service LOCK REMOTE TRANSMITTERS
BULLETIN Models:

April 30, 1999 ’95–’99 Avalon XLS

Introduction This bulletin describes procedures that are used to program the three or four button
remote transmitter to Avalons that are equipped with Wireless Door Lock Control.

’95–’97 Transmitter Identification ’98–’99 Transmitter Identification

S The 1995–97 Transmitter has LOCK, S The 1998–99 Transmitter has LOCK,
UNLOCK, and TRUNK features. UNLOCK, TRUNK and PANIC features.

NOTE:
When a new remote is programmed, all previous codes are erased. Because of this,
all remotes should be entered during the same programming session, otherwise a
remote may no longer be registered and operate the vehicle.
For Customer Satisfaction, request that any existing remote(s) be furnished when
programming a new or replacement unit.

PROGRAMMING OEM WIRELESS DOOR LOCK REMOTE TRANSMITTERS – EL003–99 April 30, 1999

Programming The PRG (Program) circuit of the

Procedure for Wireless Door Lock ECU is grounded to
’95–’97 Models perform programming. This can be
accomplished at a satellite location, the
Light Failure Sensor, located in the trunk
near the left hinge.

NOTE:
Up to two remotes can be programmed
to operate each vehicle.
Light Failure Sensor

1. With the key OUT of the ignition

switch, locate and disconnect the
Black
Light Failure Sensor from the vehicle Wireless PRG

harness. ECU.

2. Using a suitable jumper wire, connect
terminal number 12, PRG (black) to
Jumper Wire
terminal number 11, GND
(white/black) of the 12 cavity Light
GND
Failure Sensor connector (illustrated).
The vehicle confirms programming
mode by cycling the power door locks
(lock–unlock) once in addition to Wire Harness
activating the trunk opener motor to
unlock.
3. Depress, then release, any button on
the remote. The vehicle confirms
registration by cycling the power door
locks (lock–unlock) once again.
4. To program an additional remote,
repeat step 3.
5. Disconnect the jumper wire to exit
programming mode.

Programming A. For the 1998–99 model years, instead of grounding the PRG (program) circuit as in
Procedure for earlier models, a unique sequence of ignition switch and door inputs is used for
’98–’99 Models programming. Additionally, there are now two modes: Rewrite and Confirmation.
S In Rewrite mode, all previous codes are erased and new ones can be added.
S Confirmation mode reveals how many remotes are currently registered.
NOTE:
Up to four remotes can be programmed to operate each vehicle.

NOTE:
The ’98 Avalon Repair Manual (RM598U) is incorrect, as on page BE–86 there is
reference to an Add and Prohibition mode, which does not exist. For corrections to
the ’98 Avalon Repair Manual and detailed information, refer to TSB PG003–99 or the
’99 Avalon Repair Manual (RM565U), otherwise use the following procedure for
successful programming:

B. To access either mode, start off by having the:

S Key out of the ignition
S Driver’s door open and unlocked
NOTE:
Avoid pausing between steps 1 – 7. Programming the first remote should take
approximately 45 seconds.

1. Insert (do not rotate), then remove key from the ignition switch.
2. At the Master Switch on the driver s door, use an even pace and actuate the
power door lock rocker switch to obtain five LOCK/UNLOCK cycles in less than
ten seconds.

NOTE:
One cycle equals a lock command followed by an unlock command.

3. Close, then open the driver’s door.

4. Repeat the LOCK/UNLOCK sequence as described in step 2.
5. Insert key and cycle the ignition switch LOCK/ON/LOCK
a. Two times to request Rewrite mode
b. Three times to request Confirmation mode
6. Remove key from ignition switch.
a. If the Rewrite request is recognized, the vehicle will respond by cycling the
power door locks LOCK/UNLOCK twice to confirm Rewrite mode.
b. If the Confirmation mode is recognized, the vehicle will respond by cycling
the power door locks LOCK/UNLOCK from 1 to 4 times to indicate how many
remotes are currently registered. If no remotes are registered the door locks
will cycle 5 times.
S If there is no response, return to step number 1 and try again.

7. If Rewrite mode has been confirmed, as in Step 6a:

a. Depress, then release, any button on one remote.
b. Depress, then release, any button on the same remote again. The vehicle will
respond by cycling the power door locks LOCK/UNLOCK:
Once to confirm if the remote was registered.
Twice to indicate an incomplete or erroneous procedure.
When adding an additional remote(s), repeat Steps 7a and 7b for each remote.
C. Rewrite mode is terminated if one of the following occurs:
S More than 20 seconds have elapsed since Step 7b.
S The driver’s door is closed.
S The key is inserted in the ignition switch.
S Four remotes have been registered.
