PhD Scholarship in mmWave Radio Systems (including 5G)

We are currently inviting talented PhD candidates who are interested in future terrestrial and
satellite communications infrastructure. Our primary aim is to invent world-class solutions to
enable faster and more power efficient millimetre wave systems.
The target is high performance but low cost circuits for applications ranging from the internet
of things to satellite communications. The technology that will be used in this area will vary
depending on the application but two initial areas of exploration will be PCB-level waveguide
structures and integrated circuit design using CMOS silicon circuits. The initial focus will be
on active circuits such as power amplifiers, mixers and low noise receivers, but passive filter
structures are also part of our research agenda. With a number of scholarships available, the
successful student will be able to explore a variety of options. The research, led by Dr. Ronan
Farrell, will be undertaken in collaboration with the SFI CONNECT Research Centre for
Telecommunications.
Interested candidates should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Electronic
Engineering, Computer Science or a cognate discipline. Applicants who have any experience
in the area of wireless communications are particularly welcomed. This work is inherently
multidisciplinary and the successful applicant will need to collaborate with computer scientists,
engineers and with industry.
Successful candidates will join a large multi-disciplinary team and introduced to many
projects relating to the main aspects of RF systems. As such, candidates will be initially
enrolled on a full-time Masters of Engineering Science, with a review after 18 months for
progression to a PhD programme. There will also be an opportunity for internships with our
industry partners, in Ireland and overseas.
The studentship will cover fees and provide an annual stipend of 17,000 Euros.
The position is available to start in October 2015.
Applicants should supply by email:
1.) a detailed CV including a detailed discussion of their latest work,
2.) two references,
3.) a complete list of publications where applicable.
Please include MMWAVE in the subject of your email to callan@nuim.ie
Applicants from outside of the EU are welcome to apply for all positions, however please state
clearly your visa requirements in your initial emails. Please list your citizenship in your email
subject.
