ACADEMIC LESSON PLAN

School Counselor: Nicolaus Ribaudo

Date: 2016/2017

Activity: Students will complete a self-assessment and connect strengths & interests to
possible careers to increase their self-awareness in an effort to identify educational and
career options best fit for them.
Grade: Ogden International High School 7th Graders

Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to lists their strengths and interests referencing the self-assessments.
2. Students will describe the connection between their strengths and interests and possible
careers relating how their strengths and interests appeal to a career field.
3. Students will make connection between their peers strengths and interests and match
them with potential careers.

Plan for Evaluation:


At the end of the lesson, students will be able to list at least three potential careers that fit
with their strengths/interests.

Procedure:
Discuss student interests. Ask students What are your hobbies? Or, what do you like to
do in your free time? Encourage all students to contribute to discussion.
Identify and explore student strengths and interests. Divide students into groups of three
to four. Next, as a class, explore the CareerOneStop site to familiarize students with it.
Ask students to locate the Explore Careers tab, and find the self-assessments and career
profiles. Then, ask students if they are comfortable with navigating the site checking in
by group. Once each group expresses they are ready to proceed have students take turns
taking the interest assessment and skills assessment.
Connect interests with careers. Have students explore the various occupations that the site
has matched them with. Prompt them by saying, Discuss with your group the careers
you have been matched with and write down any similarities and differences amongst
your group members. Have a volunteer from each group share their groups list with the
class. Acknowledge that all students have different interests and skills.
Revisit student interests. Ask students, How does the things you like to do relate to the
potential careers that would fit you? Go around class and ask students to each list three
careers that would fit them.
Process Data:
Once per year, during the fall semester Ogden International 7th grade students will
explore Career One Stop website, take self-assessments, and discuss careers within small
groups and as class identifying strengths, interests, and potential careers.
Perception Data:
100% of students will be able to successfully identify specific strengths and interests.
100% of students will be able to list at least three potential careers that appeal to their
strengths/interests.
Outcome Data:
After the lesson, 7th grade students will be able to identify their strengths and interests,
and match them to potential careers resulting in increased self-awareness and career
awareness.

Follow-up:
After exploring various careers, students will be asked to do research on a career of their
choice, and produce a one-page write up about that career. Students will be encouraged to
explore education requirements, average salary, occupation outlook, etc.
