VOLLEYBALL
All the basics you need to know
Basic Information
Volleyball is played with 6 players on each
team and played on a court that is 59 ft by
29.5 feet. In a volleyball match, it is
consisted of 2 or 3 games, each played to
25 points and winning by 2 except the 3rd
set is only played until 15 points, also
winning by 2. Each side gets 3 contacts to
get the ball onto the other side without
the ball touching the ground or an illegal
contact.

Volleyball is a sport either played indoors or on sand, that was

created in 1895 in Massachusetts. It was created from the
sports basketball, baseball, tennis and handball and was
originally played by people who thought basketball was to
intense. There are over 800 million volleyball players
worldwide and is typically played in schools, clubs, for fun,
and professionally.

Positions (volleyball advisors)

Outside Hitter- a hitter that attacks the ball from
the left pin on the court. Also a good all around
player because they play front row and back row
Middle Hitter- typically the tallest players on the
team that attacks the ball from the middle of the
court. These players are usually not very good
passers but are outstanding blockers and can
jump very high.
Right Side Hitter- a hitter that hits on the right
side pin and gets set behind the setter. Very
similar role to the outside hitter
Setter- the playmaker of the team and sets up
the offense. Plays either right front (when
running a 5-1) or right back (when running a 6-2)
Libero- the best defensive player on the team
that plays back row only. These players wear a
different colored jersey so the referees can
identify them and make sure they are not doing
anything illegal. These players are allowed to
enter and exit the court without a substitution.
Only one on the court at a time but can be up to
two Liberos per team.
Defensive Specialist (DS)- very similar to Liberos
but have to make a substitution action. Many
outside hitters are also defensive specialists
because they are all around players. These
people to not wear a different colored jersey

Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a physical

education teacher in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Volleyball was
originally called Mintonette and played with any amount of players.
The game was first played with 9 innings with 3 serves per team,
per inning. The first net volleyball that was played with was 6'6" tall,
now played with a 7'4" net in women's volleyball and a 7'11-5/8 net
for men's volleyball. In the Philippeans in 1916 the styles of setting
and spiking were introduced and 4 years later in 1920, the three hit
rule was established ("Volleyball")
