PURPOSE
To safely change-out a faulty or clotted connector
SITE APPLICABILITY
Applicable to all areas within BCCH and all patients requiring ECLS.
PRACTICE LEVEL/COMPETENCIES
ECLS is considered an advanced skill and only those with advanced training in ECLS are to perform this
task.

8 clamps.
Sterile towels
Sterile scissors
2 x 60 ml syringes
Sterile connector
Sterile gloves (staff protection)
2% chlorhexidine gluconate with 70% alcohol swab (CHG/alcohol)
Blunt needle
PROCEDURE
1. Prepare for separation from bypass as per protocol.
2. Cool the patient if applicable (see cooling guidelines).
3. Separate as per protocol
4. Place clamp #1 at connector inlet tubing place clamp #2
5. Place clamp #3 at connector outlet, tubing place clamp #4
6. CHG/alcohol swab between clamp #1 and clamp # 2 and between clamp # 3 and clamp #4.
7. Use sterile scissors to cut the tubing next to clamp #1 and clamp #3.
8. Insert new connector into inlet tubing
9. Fill and de-air the new connector with crystalloid using a 60ml syringe and blunt needle.
10. Fill the outlet tubing with crystalloid and connect the outlet tubing to the new connector. Have an
assistant drip into connector point during the maneuver.
