Success Class
Purpose of course:
Academic Studies is designed as a work lab as well as an opportunity to help students
develop their academic skills. Through mini-lessons, group discussions, class routines,
and the opportunities that arise through academic work, students consider and practice
the following skills: the use of a daily planner as an organization/planning tool, workable
organization of notebooks/binders, planning long-term assignments, listening skills, notetaking skills, memory techniques, social skills, understanding of individual learning
styles, test taking and research skills.
Class Objectives:
In Academic Success, students will:
1. Review and reinforce concepts taught in all academic classes.
2. Develop and utilize a variety of study and organizational skills, including long-term
planning.
3. Receive support in managing the high school curriculum.
4. Begin to develop self-advocacy skills and independence.
Class Expectations:
1. Students will come to each class with appropriate materials (pen, pencil, binder, daily
planner).
2. Academic Success is a time when students can begin to complete all nightly
homework. It is also a time for students to ask clarifying questions that will assist them in
the completion of all nightly homework.
3. Students are expected to participate appropriately in all classroom activities while
putting forth their best effort.
4. Students will follow the school rules as stated in the student handbook.
5. Students will show respect for all teachers, students, and property.
Required materials:
Daily planner, pencils, erasers, organizational materials such as folders to organize
student work from ALL academic courses.
