PERICLASE

ABOUT PERICLASE
Periclase is a rare but widely distributed mineral.
Formula

: MgO Isometric.

RI Value

: n = 1.738 to 1.760.

Color

: Colorless in thin sections.

Form

: Periclase occurs in small crystals or anhedral crystal aggregates.

Individual anhedral may be recognized by cleavage traces.

Cleavage

: Cubic. Parting, dodecahedral.

Relief

: High, n > balsam.

Birefringence : Nil. Dark between crossed nicols.

Character

: The cubic cleavage, high relief, and isotropic character taken together
are distinctive.

Alteration

: Periclase is usually altered to brucite which, in turn, may be altered to

hydromagnesite.

Occurrence

: The most common occurrence of periclase is in metamorphic

limestones. It is found as cores within brucite spots that are formed by
hydration of the periclase. Artificial periclase, now prepared on a
commercial scale from selected magnesite, is more familiar than the
natural mineral. It is used as a high-grade electrical insulator.

PYROPE

ABOUT PYROPE
Pyrope is one of the six minerals of garnet group.
Formula

: Mg3Ab(Si04)3.

RI Value

: n = 1.741 to 1.760.

Color

: Colorless, pale reddish, pale to dark brown, greenish gray, in thin

sections. Crystals are often zoned.

Form

Euhedral

dodecahedral

crystals

in

six-sided

sections

and

trapezohedral crystals in eight-sided sections are common.

Cleavage

: Absent.

Relief

: Very high, surface rough, n > balsam.

Birefringence : varieties are dark between crossed nicols but some have weak or very
weak birefringence. The birefringent areas are often arranged in zones
or sectors.
Character

: Garnet resembles spincl, but the latter occurs in octahedra. The

different kinds of garnet may be determined by indices of refraction
combined with the determination of the specific gravity.

Alteration

: The most common alteration product of garnct is chlorite.

Occurrence

: Garnet is especially characteristic of metamorphic mineral. It is also a

very common detrital mineral. Pyrope is practically confined to
peridotites and derived serpentines.
