task 1C Data
Protection Act
It is important to use client record cards
because this helps to keep any client
information confidential and to keep any
contra indications known.
Client record cards should be held in a
lockable filing cabinet and maintained for up
to a year.
It is important to maintain client
confidentiality because if a client feels like
they are not able to trust you and your fellow
employees that they would not return back to
the salon. Also it is against the law to hand
out any private information that a client has
entrusted you with, if compromised then they
can take legal action against you and the
salon that you work with.
The legislation that controls client information
used during the consultation period is the
Data Protection Act.

Task 1D
structure of hair
and skin
Skin
Is a complex
organ made up
of diferent
layers and
contains many
parts:
Oil
Sweat glands
Hair muscles
Blood and
lymph glands
Nerves and
sensory
organs.
Skin is made up of 3
main layers :
Epidermis
Dermis
Subcutaneous or fatty
layer

Functions of hair and

skin
Epidermis: outside layer of skin that you can
see.
Dermis: consists of connective tissue and
cushions the body from stress and strain.
Sweat Gland: a small gland that secretes sweat,
situated in the dermis of the skin.
Arrector Pili Muscle: are small muscles attached
to hair follicles. Contraction of these muscles
causes the hairs to stand on end, known
colloquially as goose bumps.
Hair Follicle: the sheath of cells and connective
tissue which surrounds the root of a hair.
Sebaceous Gland: Attached to follicle and
releases oil called Sebum onto hair and skin.
Blood supply: The main artery of the body is
called the aorta. It supplies blood to all parts of
the body with the exception of the lungs.
Hair Shaft: is made up of 3 layers: the medulla
is the middle, the cortex is the chemical layer,
and the cuticle is the outside layer.

Structure

The hair is protein called Keratin, which is

made up from various chemicals, carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur.
The hair is hygroscopic, which means it is
able to absorb moisture. It can absorb up to
15% of it total weight in water.

Task D Hair
growth cycle &
rate

The hair grows

approximately 1.25 cm
every month.

Anagen
Anagen : when a hair
follicle is active and the
hair is growing. The period
of active growth for scalp
hair is from 1.25 7 years.
New hairs in early Anagen
grow faster than old hairs.
Between 80 -90% of scalp

11

Catagen
Catagen : Anagen is
followed by a short period
of change called Catagen.
During this time, hair
follicles undergo a period
of change and do not grow.
Catagen lasts about 2
weeks during which
growing stops and new
cells are formed.
At any one time only about
1% of follicles are in the
Catagen state.

12

Telegen
Telegen : finally, the
follicle enters a period of
rest (dormant like a
squirrell in the winter)
known as Telegen.
This stage lasts for about
3-4 months about 13% of
follicles are in Telegen
state at any one time.

Characteristics of
hair structure &
types

Types of hair are :

Asian (straight)
Caucasian (wavy)
African Caribbean (tight curls)

African Caribbean
Usually very tightly curled and often very dark,
African Caribbean hair is almost kidney shaped when
seen in cross section.
African Caribbean hair is easily damaged. Take care
when using treatments, particularly chemical
treatments.
Asian
Asian hair is often straight and has a tendency to be
lank. It varies in colour from very dark to medium
brown and can be thick and very strong. In cross
section, it is round.
Caucasian
Caucasian or European hair can be straight, wavy or
curly. It varies in colour from very dark brown to light
blonde. In cross section, European hair is oval.
15

Texture of hair

layers there are presents
the more resistant the hair
is.

Medium Hair: The thicker
the texture the more layers
of cuticle which is present.

each individual strand of
hair. The cuticle is made up

16

Healthy hair
2 factors to having healthy hair are:
Maintaining a healthy diet, Fresh fruit
and vegetables, sufficient protein and
carbohydrates, and plenty of water will give
a body all the nutrients it needs to stay
healthy.
Environmental: The condition of your
client's hair will be influenced by their
surroundings. Whether they live with soft or
hard water will afect their hair and
determine the cleansers and conditioners
that should be used on it.
Clients who live near the sea will sufer the
same efects on their hair as clients who
live in areas with high pollution. Their hair
will be coated with salt or impurities and
will need to be washed and conditioned
regularly, if not every day.
