Math Reflection
3/09/16
After the reading I believe that a lot of important knowledge needs to
be acquired in order to teach. Starting from kindergarten all the way to
high school students should be taught the appropriate skills and content
to succeed in mathematics. In first grade teachers need to know base ten,
addition/subtraction to ten and strategies. Another example is teachers
need to know about geometric shapes and its attributes. However, as
students get older they will be learning more complex mathematics. In
general, students will be taught to problem solve and prove their answers
with work. In fourth grade, teachers need to be knowledgeable with
multiple digit multiplication and quotient strategies, fractions, and
geometric figures plus their properties.
Throughout my education I was fortunate to have great teachers in
math. They taught me well and showed me the ways to succeed when it
comes to mathematics. In high school being taught algebra and geometry
really helped my knowledge. Also, in college taking statistics and calculus
expanded my thinking and problem solving areas in math. Now in the
university my mathematics classes for my major have been the most
helpful in preparing me to teach mathematics.

Both Math 107 and 207 taught me the real expectations needed from
teachers and what students should be learning in an elementary school.
Since the new standards have changed the whole math content and
objectives it is important to learn the right way and be very
knowledgeable when it comes to teaching the future generation.
I feel well prepared in the area such as whole numbers, fractions, base
ten, addition facts, subtractions facts, multiplication and quotient facts,
and geometric figures. My mathematics courses have influenced me
greatly, but I believe there is even much more I need to know and master.
In order to be an effective teacher I should always obtain knowledge, put
it in use, and be able to teach it. On the other hand, I feel like I am not
fully prepared in the higher-level mathematics in elementary age. I know
about the areas and material but I want to feel very secure in knowing
that I can implement the content the correct way. As well as to have
students understand my teaching ways and acquire the right knowledge
for them to be successful in mathematics.
I plan to use my math 107 and 207 homework assignments to
demonstrate the type of mathematics that teachers need to know. I will
also include both my LBS 400 math lesson plan and math reflection. I also
want to share my math personal reflections, which discuss my math
journey. The work samples demonstrate the areas and content that should
be taught to students. It explains in detail the ways certain math
problems can be solved and what steps or strategies to take in order to

problem solve. I learned a lot in my math courses, which also prepared
me to know what exactly I need to be learning and focusing on as a future
teacher.
I believe my work samples connect to my learning and personal
experience by exploring my journey in mathematics. And how through out
the years the content hasnt really changed, but the way it is taught and
the steps that it takes to get an answer. I am a strong believer in really
knowing all areas/subjects because to teach is to know. If a teacher is not
knowledgeable or does not know the math content how is he/she going to
be an effective teacher?
