Dear Parents,
On ________________________________, your child will have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to
either Days Cove or Dundee Creek as an extension of the 8th Grade Science Curriculum.
On this trip, students will have the opportunity to experience nature and learn about the impact that humans
have on the environment around them. Information learned on the trip directly applies to the Changing Chesapeake
Unit of the 8th grade curriculum and our Green School goals. At the site, we will canoe in teams and explore the
aquatic habitat. In doing so, students will learn about types of organisms that are indigenous to this region and the role
they play in their ecosystem. We will discuss the importance of water quality to the Chesapeake Bay; as well as the
impact that our increasing population has had on streams and the bay. Students will have the opportunity to explore a
local ecosystem on a first hand basis.
The trip will run from approximately 8:00 am until 2:00pm. A BCPS bus will transport students to and from
the investigation site. On the day of the trip students will take their normal transportation both to and from school.
The cost of the program may range anywhere from $15 to $20 per student to pay for buses. Please indicate
whether or not your child will be able to participate in this program by returning this letter to your childs science
teacher by ______________________________. If for any reason you do not want your child to participate in this
program, other arrangements will be made for your child on the day of the trip. Once we have an idea as to how many
students will be able to participate, permission slips that reflect the final cost of the program per student will be sent
home. If the cost of this program is an issue, please contact your childs science teacher or provide a note below.
Thanks in advance of your support of this great science opportunity!
