Oneofthemostfrequentlydefinedobjectivesofstudyabroadprogrammesisthatofcreatinga
morepositiveattitudetowardsthosefromotherEuropeancountriesandstrengtheningthesense
ofbelongingtoEurope.Severalstudieshavedemonstratedthatthereisagreaterattachmentto
thehostcountryandEuropeamongstudentswhohavehadanexperienceofstudyabroad,as
opposedtothosewhohavenotstudiedabroad,whoinsteadshowhigherlevelsofattachmentto
theircountryoforigin(KingandRuizGelices2003).
ThepurposeofthisstudyistoidentifytheeffectsofparticipationintheErasmusprogrammeon
thedevelopmentoftheculturalinteractionandpersonaldevelopmentofstudents.Havingdrawn
upassessmentquestions,acausallinkmustbedeterminedbetweenthetreatment(Erasmus
programme)andchangesinrepresentation/behaviourassignifiedbyresultingvariablesand,
specifically,theanswertothefollowingquestion:Doesitwork?orHavetheresultsbeen
achieved?Itis,therefore,necessarytoisolatetheobjectofstudyfromthoseexternalconditions
whichmayaffectthefinalresult,avoidingtheattributionofprogrammeeffects(whetherpositive
ornegative)tootherfactors.
