Dr. Benito Reyes wrote a poem expressing that the depth of his love for his lover cannot be measured or fathomed, like the vastness of the ocean or sky. The poem suggests the reader find the answer to how much he loves in his eyes and the silence of his lips, as some things are best left unspoken. Reyes discovered the "minimum happiness law", which states that no one is capable of happiness if they are incapable of loving another person besides themselves. Reyes was a Filipino professor who served as the first president of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila from 1967-1972. He had a distinguished career teaching philosophy in the Philippines and United States.

You would want to fathom the ocean And scale the infinite blue above us. Shall I count the sands on the seashore, Or pick the numberless stars of heaven Like some sweet woodland blossoms? Ask then the bold eagle of the air If you could soar the ends of the distance , Or the worm of the ground if it could crawl Down to the very core of the earth. And you ask me how much I love you Ah, lovely inquisitive lips, You would want to fathom the ocean And scale the infinite blue above us. Read !read the answer in my eyes And in the quiverless muteness of my lips... For there are things that are voiceless And would be told only in silence!
Dr. Benito reyes wrote this poem because he discovered a
law that is: The minimum happiness Law, which state that : No man is capable of happiness who is incapable of loving one other person than himself.
