CORE COMPETENCY 6
Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups,
Organizations, and Communities

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 6.1

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the
social environment, person-in-environment, and
other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to
engage with clients and constituencies.
Understanding that patients are unable to do
certain things is often tough. Sometimes it is
necessary to stop and remember the reason they
are in the facility- for rehab.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 6.2

Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to
effectively engage diverse clients and
constituencies.
Although I may not have shared the experience of
certain surgeries or simply living in a facility such as
NHC, it is always necessary to show compassion and
understanding for patients on a daily basis. It can be
even more difficult if that patient has a language
barrier. I often reflect on how I have assisted patients
to ensure that I have shown empathy or think of
ways I should.

HOW I USED THIS COMPETENCY

These competencies are used on a daily basis. I
feel that I will make mistakes, but trying to
correct how I have said or done something that
may come across as confusing or difficult, is one
way to ensure that I will not make the same
mistake in the future. Reflection is a necessary
tool in social work to learn and enhance delivery
for the well-being of others.
I also engage with diverse clients by using
translators and repeating what the client states to
ensure I understand what they are saying.
