CORE COMPETENCY 7
Assess individuals, families, groups,
organizations, and communities.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.1

Collect and organize data, and apply critical
thinking to interpret information from clients and
constituencies.
I used this practice behavior by collecting BIMs
and PHQ9 forms and preparing them to be
entered into the computer for my supervisors
use. I applied critical thinking by asking questions
from the BIMs and PHQ9 forms in a way that all
patients would be able to comprehend.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.2

Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social
environment, person-in-environment, and other
multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in
interventions with clients and constituencies.
I used this practice behavior by having a basic
understanding and respect for patients in that they
live in the facility. While I can leave the facility,
many of the patients cannot. It is important to
remember this and consider this key point when
speaking with the patient. It is also a factor in using
the proper framework in which to conduct the
interview with the patient.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.3

Develop mutually agreed-on intervention goals
and objectives based on the critical assessment
of strengths, needs, and challenges within clients
and constituencies.
I used this practice behavior by allowing the
patient to make decisions concerning goals about
returning home or leaving the facility for another
facility. I also try and help them see and discuss
with them the benefits or limitations to both
decisions.

PRACTICE BEHAVIOR 7.4

Select appropriate intervention strategies based
on the assessment, research knowledge, and
values and preferences of clients and
constituencies.
I used this practice behavior by applying what I
learned from class, observing and listening to my
supervisor, and considering which strategies of
intervention should be appropriate for each
patient. I also consider that fact that each patient
is different and therefore each intervention
strategy will be unique to the patient.

HOW I USED THIS COMPETENCY

I use these core competencies of assessing
individuals, families, groups, organizations, and
communities on a daily basis. Applying what I
have learned in class and by listening to my
supervisor helps me to determine which
frameworks to use. I am able to monitor each
patient and watch their growth by advocating for
them and empathetically help them reach goals.
