functions- algebraic approach
Objectives: Complete lesson 9 of
the workbook.

Solve problems that involve quadratic
equations.
[C, CN, PS, R, T, V]

Prior knowledge:
From the previous lesson, students
will be familiar with the first
projectile question. Students will
have seen word problems in
quadratics from the previous
lesson.
From previous lessons, students
should have an understanding of
how to read off information from
an equation in standard form.
Possible Challenges:

Duration: 60 minutes

previous word problems they worked onalgebraically, as opposed to using their
calculators.
Students will understand how they can
reach the same answers solving the
problems using either method,
algebraically or graphically.

Workbook

Possible Solution:

Students may have difficulty understanding

the h and t values are equivalent to y and x
values.
Students may struggle with understanding
that height is a function of time.
Students may struggle to understand how to
algebraically solve for maximum values.
Students may again struggle in using
completing the square method when a>0.
