News Flash
Have you ever thought that this might be one of the most
important battles in history? Hopefully it is because it is
definitely one to be remembered. Let me give you the 411 on
what happened. As you know, Persia had control over most
the world and it was all because of their cruel leader, King
Darius. You may not know this but whatever country that
they took over, the people would become his slaves. This is
the reason that our leaders stood up against him because
someone had to, or we would have been next. Meanwhile,
the Athens were preparing for battle against the Persians.
The first attack they made was daring and risky. They went
to the capital city of Persia and burned the Sardin to the
ground. After this event occurred, King Darius vowed to get
his revenge. The Persians allied with the Athenians to take
Athens and burned it down. They waited several days before
King Darius made his first attack. FYI the Athens had about
10,000 fighters and Persians and Athenians had about
100,000. The Persians and Athenians made their first attack
by destroying a city in Greece named Eritria and then sailed
for Marathon. The Persians had hoped that the Athens were
busy with a civil war after all the chaos they had caused. So,
they loaded their ships and set sail to destroy the Athens.
Although King Darius had a mischievous plan, the Athens
had a better one. They were at the coastline of Marathon
when the Athens attacked and surrounded the Persians by
surprise, and defeated them. The Persians returned to Persia
after they discovered that civil war had not broken out and
that the Athen army reached Persia before their ships did. A
man named Phidippeies raced 25 miles at top speed to
Athens to deliver the good news that they had won the battle
just before he fell to the ground and died. He definitely lived
life to the fullest forces country. We are grateful to him for
delivering the good news to the Athens in time.
