Course Description

DHYN 111 Oral Health Education is an introductory course intended to teach


the fundamentals of patient education, including: effective communication
techniques, development of provider-patient relationships, antimicrobial
therapies, nutritional counseling, tobacco cessation counseling, patient
motivation, human needs model, cultural and life stage factors. Emphasis is
placed on prevention of oral diseases by means of patient education and self
home care.

Core Competencies
This course satisfies three of the four Core Competencies as stated in the
Aim High Dental Hygiene Program Manual:
1. Dental Hygiene Process of Care: Dental hygiene graduates must
demonstrate competency in assessing oral health care needs,
providing comprehensive dental hygiene care, and educating diverse
populations. 3
2. Health Education Strategies: Dental hygiene graduates will identify
health education strategies for oral health promotion and disease
prevention for diverse populations. 3
3. Legal & Ethical Principles: Dental hygiene graduates must be
competent in dental hygiene principles within their scope of practice.

Course Policies

Students are responsible for reading all assignments prior to class in order to
participate in class discussions. Students are encouraged to actively engage
in class discussions, ask questions, and help stimulate a learning
environment to their peers.

Professional Conduct
Aim High Dental Hygiene students are expected to exhibit professional
behavior throughout the course of the program. Students should prepare for
all courses through reading materials and homework assignments, and to be
ready to engage in discussions, group assignments, and presentations.
Personal use of electronics are distracting and disrespectful to your fellow
classmates and instructors. We highly encourage students to be fully present
in order to maxmize the student's learning experience.

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory for all lectures. Any absences must be brought to
the instructor's attention as soon as the student is aware of such absence
(except in emergency cases). Absence will result in a deduction of 10 points
from attendance. Tardiness is not acceptable. In case of emergency, please
contact me by either phone or email between the hours of 7am-8pm.

*CE Course Quiz Certificates must be turned in at the beginning of class for
full points. Five points will be deducted from total points for each day an
assignment is late.
*Students must receive a "C" or higher to advance in the program.
Grading Equivalents:
93%-100% = A
84% - 92% = B
75% - 83% = C
65% - 74%= D
< 65%

Collaborative Learning Environment


This is a hybrid course that combines both traditional classroom lectures and
the use of the Collaborative Learning Environment on your Student Portal.
Lecture slides, modules, and course resources may be found under the DHYN
111 CLE. Students will upload their CE Course Quiz Certificates and their Oral
Health Education Brochure onto the CLE for submission.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Compose an individual plan of treatment with the component phases
of Assessment, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation
2. Develop communication skills necessary for delivering oral hygiene
instruction to patients utilizing the basic principles of communication
theory
3. Discuss the importance of oral hygiene education in regards to
preventing oral disease.

4. Exhibit sensitivity to individual's emotions, needs, rights, and comforts


with emphasis on the influence of cultural, psychosocial, and other
factors.
