1: Work, Energy and Power

What is work?

-the transforming or converting of

energy from one type to another
-the symbol for work is W and it is
measured in joules (J)

What is
energy?

-the ability of an object to do work

What types of
energy are
there?

-potential energy (PE) and kinetic

energy (KE) are the main two

11.1: Work, Energy and Power

What is
potential
energy?

-the energy that can be stored in an

object (ex. gravitational, elastic,
electrical, etc.)

What is kinetic
energy?

-the energy of motion

-depends on the speed and mass of
an object
KE = mv2
-when an objects speed changes,
work done is equal to the change in
kinetic energy

11.1: Work, Energy and Power

How can we
calculate
work?

-use the equation:

W = KEfinal KEinitial
-which is the same as W = E

The Law of
Conservation
of Energy:

-in any closed system, the total

amount of energy remains constant
(energy cannot be created or
destroyed, it can only change
forms)

11.1: Work, Energy and Power

What is power?

-the rate at which energy is

transformed (rate at which work is
done)
-the symbol for power is P and it is
measured in watts (W)
-1 W = 1 J/s

How can we
calculate
power?

-use the equation:

P = E/t
or

P = W/t
