Why Technology?
Though the use of
technology can be
harmful for a child
when used incorrectly or
carelessly, the use of
supervised, age appropriate
technology in classrooms can
in fact be beneficial to your
childs learning.

Technology makes
learning math both fun and
effective!
Benefits of using technology in classrooms:
Appealing to
monestudents
Alternative
to heavy
textbooks

Prepares
children for
the future
Customized
learning

Can be used
both
individually and
collaboratively
Saves paper

Technology has become

a significant part of
childrens lives in recent
years, and the tools
technology can provide for
educational learning can be
both fun and intellectually
engaging for school-aged
children.
This newsletter will
provide two examples
of online websites and iPad
friendly applications geared
towards the practice and
improvement of elementary
level math skills.

National Library of Virtual

Manipulatives ( NLVM )
The NLVM website is a great tool for children to use on an
iPad both in school and at home!
The site has dozens of child-friendly games that encourage
the practice of basic math skills appropriate for the
participators age and grade level.
The games are fun, interactive, and kid-friendly!
For example, if your child is learning about basic
fractions in school, The Fraction Bars is a great
application on the site to help your child
practice! The app portrays a visual
representation of basic fractions using colored
fraction bars, along with the coinciding
numerical fraction.
The user is given different question prompts,
each requiring them to use the fraction bars to
accurately identify and depict the proper
numerical fractions.

Ipad Applications Geared Towards

Math Practice for Elementary-Aged
students
The use of iPads both at home and in schools is rapidly increasing.
Luckily, iPads provide children with access to hundreds of ageappropriate, educational-based applications.
The majority of these applications are free and can be easily
downloaded from the application store right to an iPad.
These applications range from games to videos, puzzles, and the
use of digital drawing tools to help children either independently
or collaboratively improve and practice basic math skills.
For example, the application Fractions! is a free game that
can be downloaded to an iPad to help children learn and
practice basic fractions.
The game allows the user to tilt the iPad to the left or the right
to control a bouncing ball containing a numerical fraction. The
user tries to place the ball in the proper quadrant on the
number line shown below.
This game will
improve users
automaticity in
recognizing the
symbolic
representation of the
given fraction and
properly placing it on
a labeled number-line
