EE 360: Problem Bank 2

1. Question 1 needs to be submitted as Assignment
A point-of-load converter is to be designed for TFT-LCDs used in central display and
rear seat entertainment of an automobile. Its input voltage varies between 2.5 V to 5.5 V
and its output voltage is 8 V. Select a switching frequency of 1.2 MHz. The average
switch current is 1.5 A. Select power components for your design. (Reference design can
be found in ISL78419 datasheet) Assume CCM operation.
Design and simulate your circuit using PSPICE:
(a) Plot Inductor current and Output Voltage with 2.5 V and 5.5 V DC input
(b) Verify a PWM controller which can keep the output voltage fixed at 8 V with 2.5
V and 5.5 V DC input. (Note you have to design a circuit which can keep Vo=8 V
by sensing the input voltage)
(c) Estimate the efficiency of the converter at full load with different input voltages
(2.5 V and 5.5 V).
2. Realize the switches (1 and 2) using Mosfets and Diodes for the following converters.

(a)

(b)

(c)
3. Plot the Mosfet and diode currents for the above converters including inductor current
ripple and mark the levels.
4. Derive the condition for DCM and voltage conversion ratio under DCM for a buckboost converter.
